The city has long been known as a politically progressive one, with a rich history of social activism. An early proponent of the abolishment of slavery, the city's own Frederick Douglass is one of its most notable historical personalities. It was Douglass who was instrumental in the publication of the then revolutionary newspaper, the North Star. Susan B. Anthony is yet another one of Rochester NY's most recognizable figures, and it was through her efforts that the University of Rochester began admitting female students in 1900.
